About Us
The Dickson County Historical Society was organized on January 20, 1956, at the War Memorial Building in Dickson. The temporary chairman, Judge James A. Weems, and Dr. Robert Corlew, professor of history at Middle Tennessee State College in Murfreesboro, explained the purpose of the proposed organization. Also in attendance were Mrs. Dockie Shipp Weems, Janie Weems, Ray Stuart, T. W. Russell, H. O. Anderson, Randall Clayburn, Mr. and Mrs. J. Minor Stuart, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. White, Clifton Goodlett, Bessie Greer, Eleanora Miller, Lola Miller, Hartwell Gentry, Wilbur F. Marsh, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harrington, Kenneth Mitchell, and Annie Lee Williams.
The first officers were President J. B. White, Vice-President Robert Corlew, and Secretary-Treasurer Annie Lee Williams. They were chosen to serve until such time as a constitution could be written. An Advisory Committee was also appointed: Ray Stuart, Mrs. Joe B. Weems, Miss Willie G. McMillan, H. O. Anderson, and Hartwell Gentry. Dues were set at $1.00 per year.
In the 53 ensuing years the Society has conducted a number of projects, including publishing a book of Dickson County Bible records, working to preserve the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church and the historic Old Jailer's House on the courthouse square in Charlotte, and printing Bernard Wiley's paintings of historic buildings and making them available for purchase.
Recent projects include The Heritage of Dickson County: 1803-2006 and the collected newspaper columns "The Over-Eighty Club" from the 1930s.
The Society looks forward to our next half-century of working to preserve and disseminate the history and family history of Dickson County. Currently we are working toward publication of a quarterly journal. We welcome submissions for consideration.
