GUIDELINES FOR SUMMISSION

The Journal of Dickson County History and Genealogy

The Journal publishes articles of significance to the history of Dickson County, Tennessee, and its region, the Western Highland Rim of Tennessee. Accepted manuscripts will demonstrate thorough research, quality writing, and careful documentation of sources. Writers are encouraged to relate their article to broad patterns of American history, including key events, episodes, and turning points.

Please feel free to discuss your proposed article with the editor in advance of sending it to the Journal. You should also take into account these guidelines as you prepare your manuscript.

  1. Citations demonstrate your thorough investigation of your subject and provide leads to others working on the same or related topics. Citations must be provided for every significant statement in your article. They should be submitted as concise, double-spaced endnotes. Material that is family tradition should be cited as such.
  2. The Journal follows the citations formats of the Chicago Manual of Style, current edition, and Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historian. For matters of spelling, refer to Webster’s Third New International Dictionary.  Please take care to recheck for accuracy all citations, quotations, proper names, dates, and statements of fact.
  3. We welcome illustrations (including written permission from the owner to publish), such as photographs, maps, or works of art. All such material should include a citation of the source/repository where the original is located.
  4. For family and genealogical history articles, the pages are open to transcribed records. Preference is given to unpublished rare and hard-to-find materials. It is the responsibility of the person offering these materials to obtain permission from anyone who may hold the original record or publication rights. Neither the Journal nor the Dickson County Historical and Genealogy Society has any responsibility for infringement of copyright by contributors.
  5. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically, preferably in a Word.doc file. The editor will accept hard copy by mail.
  6. All submissions must prominently display the name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and any other contact information so that we can reach you with editorial questions.
  7. The right to edit material for grammar, concision, form, and readability is reserved by the Journal. Sending material for consideration for publication in the Journal gives implicit permission for such editing.
